Alice Milliat (1884-1957) was a French sports activist. She played a major role in the promotion and development of women's sport in the early 20th century, seeing sport as a lever for women's emancipation, striving for gender equality and even encouraging sportswomen to campaign for women's suffrage. President of the Fémina Sport club in 1915, she was one of the founders of the Fédération des sociétés féminines sportives de France in 1917, becoming its president in 1919. She campaigned for women's participation in the Olympic Games, and when the IOC refused, decided to organize the Games herself. On Sunday August 20, 1922, 20,000 people packed the stands of the Pershing stadium in the Bois de Vincennes to watch the first official competition modelled on the Olympic Games. Such was the success of the second event, held in Sweden in 1926, that the IOC finally authorized women to take part in official athletics events at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. By 1930, a wave of conservatism had overtaken the women's emancipation movement that had been underway since the 1920s. Although the Games were a real success and the FSFI counted more and more affiliated countries, the international adventure had to come to a halt after 1934, due to a lack of resources and government support. Alice Milliat, then aged 52, retired from the public eye. No newspaper mentioned her death in Paris on May 19, 1957. Even her name was not inscribed on her tombstone in the Nantes cemetery until 2019. As a symbol, since March 8, 2021, a statue of Alice Milliat has stood in the hall of the National Olympic Committee in Paris, alongside that of Pierre de Coubertin.

Alice Milliat (1884-1957) était une militante sportive française. Elle a joué un rôle majeur dans la promotion et le développement du sport féminin au début du XXe siècle, considérant la pratique sportive comme un levier d’émancipation des femmes, visant l’égalité des sexes et encourageant même les sportives à militer pour le droit de vote des femmes. Présidente du club Fémina Sport en 1915, elle fait partie des fondatrices de la Fédération des sociétés féminines sportives de France en 1917, dont elle deviendra la présidente en 1919. Elle milite pour la participation des femmes aux Jeux Olympiques, et devant le refus du CIO, décide d’organiser elle-même des Jeux. Le dimanche 20 août 1922, 20 000 personnes se pressent dans les tribunes du stade Pershing, dans le bois de Vincennes, pour assister à cette première compétition officielle calquée sur le modèle olympique. Le succès de la seconde édition, en Suède en 1926, est tel que le CIO autorise enfin les femmes à participer à des épreuves officielles d’athlétisme lors des Jeux Olympiques de 1928 à Amsterdam. Dès 1930 une vague de conservatisme reprend la main sur le mouvement d’émancipation des femmes à l’œuvre depuis les années 1920. Alors que les Jeux connaissent un réel succès et que la FSFI compte de plus en plus de pays affiliés, l’aventure internationale doit s’arrêter après 1934, faute de moyens et de soutien gouvernemental. Alice Milliat, alors âgée de 52 ans, abandonne la scène publique. Aucun journal ne mentionne son décès à Paris le 19 mai 1957. Même son nom n’était pas inscrit sur sa pierre tombale, dans le cimetière de Nantes, jusqu’en 2019. Comme un symbole depuis le 8 mars 2021, une statue d’Alice Milliat se dresse dans le hall du Comité national olympique à Paris, aux côtés de celle de Pierre de Coubertin.
