Description
The Provence landings on August 15, 1944 were conceived by the Allies as the culmination of their efforts in Western Europe, building on several years of confrontation in the Mediterranean. From the Balkans to the Near East, from Libyan shores to the Greek islands, from Malta to Corsica, from Tunisian cities to the Italian mountains, decisive battles had been waged there since 1940. Even if Overlord has been the focus of collective memory for decades, the Mediterranean is undoubtedly a center of gravity of the Second World War. This sea is marked by colonial empires. Alongside 120,000 Americans, the French brought together almost 250,000 men for Operation Anvil-Dragoon. Commandos, airborne troops, infantry and armored divisions were drawn from the African Army, the Free French Forces and, above all, the intense mobilization in the French colonies of North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. While the Americans moved up towards the Alps, General de Lattre de Tassigny's B army, with the support of the local Resistance, seized Marseille and Toulon. While the Allies had fallen considerably behind in the Battle of Normandy, the Mediterranean cities were liberated several weeks ahead of schedule, followed by Lyon, Chalon, Mâcon and Dijon. In September 1944, these units joined the forces landed in Normandy in Burgundy. At a time when the Germans were preparing to fiercely defend the Reich, other challenges awaited the now "1st French Army": integrating the FFI into its ranks, recognizing colonized soldiers, and entering Germany to overcome the trauma of June 1940 and mark France's return to the ranks of victorious nations. Mission for the 80th anniversary of the landings, the Liberation of France and Victory
