Block of 1 stamp - Cent ans des mots croisés en France - Green letter

Current price

Description

Crosswords originated in the USA, in the columns of the "New-York Word" newspaper in 1913, created by a Briton, Arthur Wynne. The grid was entitled "Word-Cross Puzzle", and was diamond-shaped, with only three-letter words. . It wasn't until 1924 that the first French-style grid appeared in the Dimanche-Illustré newspaper, this time called the Mysterious Mosaic, although it was still presented as a word puzzle and a fun pastime. Today, crossword puzzles - while still a distraction for amateur cruciverbalists - also meet with a demanding public, who compete every year in competitions such as the Festival des mots croisés, held in Is-sur-Tille once every three years, or the annual "Autour des mots" day in Anthony.
