Description

Born in 1836, the son of a peasant and a peasant himself before becoming a postal worker in 1867, Ferdinand Cheval built an architectural work like no other in the commune of Hauterives (Drôme): an "ideal palace", a unique example of naive art applied to architecture. The man whom history refers to as the "Factor Cheval" was a self-taught man who had never touched a trowel until 1879. In April of that year, during his exhausting tour - 32 kilometers every day - he stumbled over a peculiarly shaped stone. "I said to myself: If nature wants to make sculpture, I'll make masonry. Nicknamed the "stumbling block", it was to be the first stone in his palace, which he later christened the "Temple of Nature" and then the "Ideal Palace". From then on, he devoted his life to it. Thirty-three years of hard work, gathering stones by the roadside during his rounds, returning in the evening to collect them with his wheelbarrow, working at night by the light of a kerosene lamp. Never having traveled before, he built an incredible baroque palace, as if taken from a dream, blending Arab, Greek and Hindu cultures... Considered a "madman", Factor Cheval was nonetheless convinced of the value of his work. He writes: "This marvel, of which the author can be proud, will be unique in the universe. He wants to prove that you can be a son of the people and have genius. When he was refused burial, he built "Le Tombeau du silence et du repos sans fin" in the local cemetery, which he completed two years before his death in 1924. The artistic avant-garde, including André Breton, Max Ernst and Picasso, immediately paid tribute to him. However, it wasn't until 1969 that the palace was listed as a historic monument. Sweet revenge for Postman Cheval, once mocked but now universally hailed as a master of naive art. Jean-Yves Le Naour
