Description

The framework of Notre-Dame Nicknamed "the forest", the great framework of Notre-Dame de Paris is the cathedral's best-hidden treasure. Invisible to worshippers and visitors alike, it carries the lead covering that protects the vaults from the elements. This gigantic structure, 100 metres long and 10 metres high, was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It underwent several renovations during the Middle Ages, the main one dating from 1378. In the 19th century, architects Viollet-le-Duc and Lassus restored the structure and built a new spire. Following the complete destruction by fire of this unique structure in 2019, the decision was taken to reconstruct it almost identically. An in-depth study and dating of the charred remains was carried out by some sixty wood researchers, from archaeologists to climatologists. At the same time, chief architects of the Monuments Historiques and engineers prepared the documents and calculation notes that enabled the carpenters to lay out the various structural components. Fortunately, a complete survey of the structure had been carried out in 2010. This exceptional heritage project called on age-old know-how. For example, the 1,400 or so oaks sourced from French forests were rough-cut using a mixed technique combining mechanical sawing and manual squaring. Short-handled doloires or axes were specially forged for the job. Before being transported to the site, the various parts of the framework were assembled on the ground. This "blank assembly" is a traditional carpentry technique used to check the precision of the joints. With the completion of the new framework, the cathedral has regained its legendary silhouette, silhouetted against the Paris skyline. Jérôme Coignard
