Description
A special souvenir sheet celebrating the 65th anniversary of the "Marianne à la nef" stamp will be issued at Paris Philex 2024. Originally issued in 1959, this is the 1st Marianne stamp of the Fifth Republic and one of the few Marianne stamps, and the 1st, printed in 2 colors. General de Gaulle was elected President of the Fifth Republic on January 8, 1959. As the new Republic needed to renew its symbols, Bernard Cornut-Gentille, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, was asked to issue a mass-market stamp as quickly as possible. The painter André Regagnon produced his only postage stamp. Marianne, a full-length effigy of the Republic, appears on the prow of a ship representing the State. Wearing a Phrygian cap, she looks far into the future. The sun rises on the horizon, the south wind swells the sail. The stamp was letterpress printed in 2 colors.
