Naturalist, musician, politician and historian, Lacepède was a major figure from the end of the Ancien Régime to the Restoration.
Born in Agen, he developed a passion for science and music at an early age, and embarked on a career in both fields. He composed several works, including an opera (lost), and published Poétique de la Musique (1785), in which he sought to understand the origins of the art and build an aesthetic theory. At the same time, he studied the phenomena of electricity.
But his research turned resolutely towards zoology from 1784, when he obtained a position at the Jardin du Roi (forerunner of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle) thanks to the protection of the naturalist and philosopher Buffon, whose great work, Histoire naturelle, he continued. Between 1788 and 1804, he published volumes on reptiles, amphibians, fish and cetaceans, becoming one of Europe's leading specialists on these animals. In particular, he developed bold views on the evolution of species.
During the French Revolution, he turned to politics and became a deputy to the Legislative Assembly, but as a moderate, he was forced to leave Paris under the Terror, only to return after the fall of Robespierre. He then resumed a brilliant scientific career, obtaining a chair at the Muséum and joining the Institut in 1795. He became close to Bonaparte, who entrusted him with high office after the 18 Brumaire. Appointed to the Conservative Senate (1799), in 1803 he became the first Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, the only civilian in history to have held this title. He developed and organized this institution, and contributed to the creation of its educational institutions.
Disgraced during the Restoration, he devoted his final years to writing a monumental Histoire Générale de l'Europe (General History of Europe), which was not published until after his death.

Naturaliste, musicien, homme politique, historien, Lacepède est une personnalité majeure de la fin de l’Ancien Régime à la Restauration.
Né à Agen, il se passionne très tôt pour les sciences et la musique et entame de front une carrière dans ces deux domaines. Il compose ainsi plusieurs œuvres, dont un opéra (perdu), et publie une Poétique de la Musique (1785) dans laquelle il cherche à comprendre les origines de cet art et à bâtir une théorie esthétique. Parallèlement, il étudie les phénomènes de l’électricité.
Mais ses recherches s’orientent résolument vers la zoologie à partir de 1784, quand il obtient un poste au Jardin du Roi (ancêtre du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle) grâce à la protection du naturaliste et philosophe Buffon, dont il poursuit le grand ouvrage, l’Histoire naturelle. Il publie entre 1788 et 1804 les volumes sur les reptiles, amphibiens, poissons et cétacés, devenant l’un des principaux spécialistes européens de ces animaux. Il développe notamment des vues audacieuses sur l’évolution des espèces.
Durant la Révolution, il se tourne vers la politique et devient député de la Législative, mais, modéré, doit quitter Paris sous la Terreur, pour n’y revenir qu’après la chute de Robespierre. Il reprend alors une carrière scientifique brillante, obtient une chaire au Muséum et entre à l’Institut dès 1795. Il se rapproche de Bonaparte, qui, après le 18 Brumaire, lui confie de hautes fonctions. Nommé au Sénat conservateur (1799), il devient surtout, en 1803, le premier grand chancelier de la Légion d’honneur, seul civil de l’histoire à avoir porté ce titre. Il développe et organise cette institution et contribue à la création de ses maisons d’éducation.
Tombé en disgrâce à la Restauration, il consacre ses dernières années à l’écriture d’une monumentale Histoire générale de l’Europe qui ne paraîtra qu’après sa mort.
