Description
In the midst of "Prohibition", after the phylloxera disaster that devastated the vineyards, at the end of a crisis of overproduction and poor sales of wines, after a world war and a pandemic, on November 29, 1924, in Paris, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia created the Office International du Vin. Their aim, through the definition of wine and the repression of fraud and unfair competition, was to guarantee the purity and authenticity of wine all the way to the consumer. In 1958, the OIV became the Office International de la Vigne et du Vin (International Vine and Wine Office), extending its remit to all vine products, from fresh fruit to spirits, from raisins to unfermented beverages, and expanding its mission worldwide, with members from all five continents. Following a reform adopted in 2001, 50 countries representing over 75% of the world's vineyards and almost 90% of the world's wine production will be celebrating 100 years of the International Organization of Vine and Wine in 2024. Over the course of a century, thousands of renowned scientists in viticulture, oenology, economics, law, medicine, statistics and the humanities have contributed, with almost 1,500 recommendations, to the development of a truly global corpus of vine and wine. Headquartered in Dijon, France, in the Hôtel Bouchu which illustrates the centenary stamp, the OIV has become the intergovernmental scientific and technical reference for the industry. The OIV advises its members on measures to improve the conditions under which wine products are produced and marketed, and to take consumer interests into account, whether through cooperation with other international organizations or through international harmonization of existing practices and standards. Yann Juban, Deputy Director General, OIV
