Description

Le Figaro: two hundred years of freedom Le Figaro celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2026. Named after one of Beaumarchais' characters, France's oldest and one of its most modern daily newspapers has also adopted as its motto the famous line: "Without the freedom to criticize, there is no flattering praise". And it's still today under the banner of freedom - the freedom to inform, debate and think about the world - that Le Figaro is celebrating its bicentenary across all its media: the printed daily, the website, social networks, the TV channel... and to mark the anniversary, a commemorative stamp has been unveiled. From satirical sheet to benchmark daily. Founded in January 1826 under the Restoration by two young impertinents, Maurice Alhoy and Étienne Arago, Le Figaro was initially a satirical sheet with a chaotic publication schedule. Defying censorship, the title was suspended several times before enjoying a veritable renaissance thanks to Hippolyte de Villemessant. In 1866, this former ribbon merchant turned visionary press owner transformed the small pamphleteer into a major daily. From paper to digital. A newspaper of news, comment and analysis, Le Figaro is also the journal of writers, artists and the art of living. Its columns are packed with famous names: Hugo, Zola, Baudelaire, Proust, Cocteau, Colette, Mauriac, Offenbach and Rodin. Relaunched after the Second World War by its director Pierre Brisson, Le Figaro began a long adventure in 1944 that continues uninterrupted to this day. The daily modernized, launched its weekend supplements and diversified, then, at the dawn of the 21st century, successfully took the digital and audiovisual turn to become France's leading news website. The official stamp celebrates 200 years of history for France's oldest newspaper.
