Description
EUROPEAN CAPITALS-BERNE The graceful loop of the River Aare surrounds Bern, founded in 1191 on a hilltop overlooking the river. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the capital of the Swiss Confederation owes part of its charm to the architectural unity of its old town, which has retained its medieval appearance. Discover it on foot, through cobbled streets, sandstone facades and historic towers such as the Prison Tower. Having served its original purpose from 1641 to 1897, it now houses the headquarters of the Federal Political Forum, a symbol of Swiss democracy. From the top of the emblematic Clock Tower, which has retained its original astronomical mechanism (1530), the view of the city and the Alps is magnificent. You can see the bell tower of the flamboyant Gothic collegiate church of Saint-Vincent, whose foundation stone was laid in 1421. Linger in front of the main portal and admire the realism of the polychrome figures in a depiction of the Last Judgement. Strolling through Berne is a pure pleasure, whether strolling along the 6 kilometers of arcades that cross the city, or strolling through the majestic square with its 26 fountains that runs alongside the Federal Palace, seat of government. Berne is also home to international organizations such as the Universal Postal Union (UPU), symbolized by the statue by French sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux. For 150 years, with its 192 member countries, the UPU has brought together the world's postal players to ensure a universal network of state-of-the-art products and services. Berne is an inspiring city. Einstein developed his theory of relativity here, and architect Renzo Piano created three waves of steel and glass from a meadow to house the works of the Paul Klee Museum. And watching the Bernese plunge into the clear waters of the Aare, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this is a city where life is good.
