Description

Châlons-en-Champagne One of Châlons-en-Champagne's heritage treasures is a nugget: one of France's last eight permanent circuses, inaugurated on April 16, 1899. This magnificent 12-sided reinforced-concrete building, designed by local architect Louis Gillet, hosted visiting circuses and famous troupes throughout the early 20th century, as well as numerous concerts and galas. It was sometimes diverted from its original vocation, serving, for example, as a camouflage workshop (First World War), a gas mask storage facility (Second World War) or a cinema (from 1919). In the 1950s, the building was rented out to sports associations, artists performed there and its foyer was even used as a dance hall. The establishment of the Centre national des arts du cirque (CNAC) in 1985 cemented the link between Châlons and the circus. Today, the reputation of this school for higher education in the circus arts extends beyond our borders. Students come from all over the world to follow a high-level curriculum that includes not only the equestrian arts, but also directing, contemporary dance, music, singing, general culture and an introduction to administration and communication. The sculpted portal on the building's main façade, with horses emerging from the pediment and clown heads on either side of the entrance door, evokes the traditional world of the circus. It's a world of emotion and creativity which, in the CNAC school of excellence, has evolved in its expression, making Châlons-en-Champagne the cradle of contemporary circus. With the Furies festival, the Pôle national des arts du cirque and the future project of a circus museum, the city is constantly enriching the practice of circus arts. And to share its passion with as many people as possible. Inspired by the circus, Philéas, the mascot of the young Philatelists of the Fédération Française des Associations Philatéliques, juggles on the vignette attached to the stamp. Timbres-Passion, their biennial national event, takes place in Châlons-en-Champagne from October 25 to 27, 2024. It's an opportunity to admire the finest collections competing for the French championship, and to take part in the many events aimed at the general public.
