Description

Petanque was officially born in 1907 in La Ciotat (13). It's the result of a simplification of the rules of the Provençal game, its ancestor. Its name comes from the Provençal expression "pés tanqués", meaning "tanned feet". Initially a regional discipline, rooted in the south of France, over the decades it spread throughout the country and then around the world. France has 13 regional committees, 106 departmental committees and almost 6,000 clubs affiliated to the Fédération Française de Pétanque et de Jeu Provençal, with almost 300,000 members. Pétanque has long been a leisure activity, before becoming a full-fledged sport for those who play competitively. France, creator of pétanque, is also the world's leading nation in terms of both the number of players and the number of world championship titles won by French teams. Since 1988, France has won 21 gold medals at men's world championships in 28 editions. To date, pétanque has conquered over 100 countries on every continent. Some Asian countries are particularly keen on pétanque. Increasingly popular, pétanque is televised in the same way as other major sporting disciplines. For many tour operators, pétanque is a symbol of France, as it is often included in the program of activities for foreign tourists. Much more than just a sport or leisure activity, pétanque is an integral part of French culture and contributes to France's influence around the world.
