Description

As far as the eye can see, tall maritime pines line the dunes of the Côte d'Argent on the Atlantic coast and the banks of the Garonne on the east. A territory of sandy soil, originally waterlogged in winter and dry in summer, stretching from the tip of the Médoc in the north to the meandering Adour in the south. The Landes de Gascogne forest is the largest man-made forest in Europe, covering almost a million hectares in the Landes, Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne départements. It took on its contemporary appearance between the 18th and 20th centuries, under the impetus of a series of innovations and political decisions that transformed its original physiognomy. Hitherto a marshy moorland landscape subject to the movement of the dunes on its coastal part and devoted to pastoralism - in particular sheep farming, which the Landes shepherds watched over from stilts - it became a maritime pine forest when, in 1857, Napoleon III's imperial decree called for soil reclamation and seeding. For decades, gemmage, or the harvesting of resin for the creation of various products such as turpentine, was one of the mainstays of its economic activity, but today it is mainly focused on the production of timber, industrial wood and wood for the energy sector. Paper, chemicals and education round out the range of activities. As a vast forest area, the region is obviously not immune to the challenges of climate change, notably the most recent major forest fires in 2022. However, its ecological role is also being better taken into account, with management focusing on diversifying cultivation techniques and better integrating economic activities into the regional and national ecosystem.
