Description

Françoise Sagan, whose real name is Françoise Quoirez, is a woman of letters born into a loving family in Cajarc, Lot, in 1935. She entered the literary world at just 18, with the publication of Bonjour tristesse in 1954. While still a minor, it met with exceptional success and, along with the Prix des Critiques awarded by a prestigious jury, earned her the ambiguous nickname of "charming little monster" by François Mauriac. The success, scandal and enduring infatuation of this first novel, which was placed on the index, made it stand out from the crowd. His second novel, Un certain sourire, confirmed his status as a writer and ensured him a loyal readership, despite the criticism. Her writing, described as "little music", is based on the painting of feelings, short, sometimes pithy sentences, a modern, bittersweet tone and modesty mixed with a taste for provocation. In 1957, she was involved in a serious car accident that left her addicted to opiates, and she had to free herself. Between a legend that never left her (casino, whisky, nightclubs and Ferrari), her readings and her friends, Françoise Sagan published some twenty novels, including La Chamade and La Femme fardée, a dozen plays, including Château en Suède, collections of short stories, songs, biographies, collaborated on the screenplay of Landru with Claude Chabrol, wrote newspaper columns and portraits... In 1986, she wrote her epitaph: "Françoise Sagan. First appeared in 1954, with a slim novel, Bonjour tristesse, which was a worldwide scandal. Her death, after a life and work that were equally pleasant and sloppy, was a scandal only to herself." Seriously ill, she died in Honfleur hospital on September 24, 2004, ruined.
