Description

ESQUELBECQ North Derived from the Flemish language, the name Esquelbecq probably owes its origin to the crossing of the Yser river and the presence of numerous oak trees: "la rivière aux aclands" ("the acorn river"). Esquelbecq, crowned "France's Favorite Village 2023", has charmed visitors with its authentic Flemish atmosphere. The village takes you on a journey through time, blending heritage and modernity. The cobbled town square recreates the Flemish atmosphere and reveals the charm of yesteryear through old houses and traditional dwellings. A stone's throw from Place Bergerot, the flour mill (opposite) reflects the rich industrial and agricultural activity of Flanders in bygone days. Dating from the 10th and 17th centuries, the Saint-Folquin church, proudly restored following the fire of April 11, 1976, is a fine example of a Hallekerque church. It remains the jewel in the crown of local heritage, with its superb mesotonic organ, carillon and bell tower. The jewel in Esquelbecq's crown, the listed château, can be seen from the square. It is one of the most representative examples of Flemish architecture in France. Surrounded by Renaissance-style gardens, this nugget seems straight out of a fairytale. Another place steeped in history, the Plaine au Bois site bears witness to the massacre of 80 British soldiers and one Frenchman during the Second World War. Esquelbecq's "Book Village", with its permanent booksellers, Book Night and book markets, is also a must for literature lovers. It's the promise of an authentic getaway, thanks to its rich heritage, dynamic and vibrant cultural life and crafts. Architecture, festivities, traditions, breweries... Esquelbecq offers an enchanted interlude!
