Description

Proudly perched on a wooded cliff in the heart of the Vexin regional park, the thousand-year-old keep at La Roche-Guyon overlooks the Seine valley. In the Middle Ages, it was a major defensive structure on the border between the kingdom of France and the duchy of Normandy. It was named "La Roche de Gui" in honor of its first lords. Built into the hillside, the château is linked to the keep by an underground staircase. Embellished during the Renaissance, it was home to François I and Henri IV on several occasions. Hunting was famous here, but it was the beauty of the Marquise de Guercheville, Countess of La Roche-Guyon, that is said to have attracted the Vert-Galant. In the 18th century, the château was again renovated and enlarged. Louise-Élisabeth de La Rochefoucauld, Duchess of Enville, embellished her splendid residence with a small theater and library. The manuscript of her ancestor's famous Maximes was kept here. Part of the estate is laid out as an English-style park. In the undergrowth, where nature has reclaimed its rights, today's walker can still make out the ideal shapes of this landscape magnified by man. Nestling between the gardens of the château and the loop of the Seine, the village of La Roche-Guyon was embellished by the Dukes of La Rochefoucauld. Its picturesque alleyways, stone fountain, church and columned market hall have earned it the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" label. Carved into the cliffs from the 4th century onwards, the primitive troglodyte dwellings or "boves" are a reminder of its ancient origins. Located in Impressionist territory, between Giverny and Vétheuil, La Roche-Guyon has been painted by Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet. It inspired Lamartine to write one of his first Méditations poétiques. Jérôme Coignard
