Description

Robert Tatin Museum, Mayenne Born into a modest family in Laval in 1902, Robert Tatin began his career as an apprentice house painter. He discovered the world of construction and creation, which he would never leave. After the First World War, he moved to Paris as a painter-decorator. At the same time, he enrolled at the Beaux-Arts. The 1930s were a prosperous period, during which he set up his own construction business in Laval. He traveled regularly, visiting several European countries, North Africa and New York. Deeply affected by the horrors of war, after 1945 he embarked on a purely artistic adventure. Settling in Paris, where he set up a ceramics and painting studio, he rubbed shoulders with Prévert, Breton, Cocteau, Giacometti and Dubuffet. In Brazil, he expanded his knowledge of ceramics. In 1951, he won first prize and international recognition at the São Paulo Biennial. He then traveled throughout South America, freeing himself from academic dogmas and broadening his range of shapes and colors. Settling in Vence in 1957, he exhibited in Nice and Paris, in the gallery of his patron Robert Steindecker. The artist returned to Mayenne in 1962 and bought a small house in Cossé-le-Vivien. Together with his wife Élisabeth, he set about designing and building their "Maison des Champs", which became the "Étrange musée Robert Tatin", a total work of art inspired by his experiences, travels and encounters. From then on, all the couple's energy was devoted to shaping a monumental sculpture in harmony with the surrounding bocage landscape. Robert Tatin conceived a dreamlike work, inspired by his experiences with the architects behind the construction of Brasilia and their technical and formal work with cement. The originality of this site gives it a unique place among heritage sites. As such, it has been awarded a number of distinctions: the "Musée de France" label, the "Maison des Illustres" label and classification as a Monument Historique. Today, the museum welcomes over 40,000 visitors a year.
