Description

Born in Villefranche-sur-Saône (Rhône) in 1942, Raymond Depardon occupies a singular place in the field of contemporary imagery: as much a filmmaker as a photographer, he uses still and moving images to create a unique style. He co-founded the Gamma agency in 1966. From 1974 to 1977, he covered world events as a photographer and filmmaker, including the hostage-taking of ethnologist Françoise Claustre in northern Chad. It was during this period that he made his first films. He joined Magnum Photos in 1979, and continued to work in the field of reportage and book publishing. Following the success of his film Reporters in 1981, he took part in the Datar photographic mission on the French landscape in 1984, while pursuing his film career (Faits divers, Urgences, La Captive du désert). Since 1987, he has shared his artistic passion with his wife, sound engineer and producer Claudine Nougaret. Awarded the Grand Prix National de la Photographie in 1991, he received the César for best documentary film for Délits flagrants four years later. He embarked on a long period of photographic and cinematographic work devoted to the French rural world. In 2008, he won the Prix Louis Delluc for his film La Vie moderne. In 2011, Raymond Depardon's four years on the road, entitled La France de Raymond Depardon, was exhibited at the BnF. In 2012, the year of the theatrical release of the film Journal de France, he created the official portrait of French President François Hollande. In 2013, the exhibition Un moment si doux, presented at the Grand Palais (Paris), is a great success, and will be repeated at the Mucem in 2014. In 2022, he initiates two major exhibitions, one jointly with Kamel Daoud, Son œil dans ma main, Algérie 1961-2019, at the Institut du monde arabe (Paris) and Communes, at the Pavillon populaire in Montpellier. In 2023, in Shanghai, the major exhibition La Vie moderne (Modern Life) attracted a large audience, and in the same year he received the Lucie Award for his photographic body of work. In 2024, his photos of the Olympic Games were exhibited on the streets of Paris. He won the BnF 2024 prize for his body of work. Raymond Depardon has directed 21 feature-length films, all of which have received acclaim at major film festivals, has published over 70 books of photography and is represented in numerous photographic collections in the most prestigious museums.
