Sabine Weiss is one of the leading exponents
of the French humanist photography

photographer in Geneva, before becoming
assistant to photographer Willy Maywald in

Sabine Weiss est l’une des principales

mains, affirmant ainsi son statut de photographe 
professionnelle, alors âgée de 28 ans. De façon peu 
conventionnelle, elle a choisi de poser en extérieur, 
devant un mur recouvert de graffitis. Cette date marque 
le début d’un travail intense pendant plusieurs 
décennies. Son travail personnel est rapidement exposé 
aux Etats-Unis et elle travaille durablement pour la 
presse illustrée internationale, enchaînant travaux de 
reportages, mode, publicité, portraits de personnalités et 
sujets de société.
À la fin des années 1970, la reconnaissance de son 
œuvre lui donne envie de reprendre un travail en noir et 
blanc dans lequel elle fait entendre une voix plus intime, 
centrée sur les solitudes, les croyances et les moments 
pensifs de l’existence. Elle connaît dans les dix dernières 
années de sa vie une notoriété sans précédent et fait don 
de ses archives au musée Photo Élysée à Lausanne. 
Jusqu’à son dernier souffle, le 28 décembre 2021, elle 
aura, avec passion, abordé tous les domaines de la 
photographie comme un défi, un prétexte de rencontres 
et de voyages, une façon de vivre et un mode 
d’expression de soi, en constante sympathie avec l’autre.
