Description

A graduate of the Ecole Boulle and the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré, a regular at major art events (biennials, museums, performances...) and a recognized figure in "urban art", of which he was one of the French precursors in the early 1980s, painter Jérôme Mesnager has always set himself free from conventions and borders. Created in 1983, his famous white man has toured the world, appearing in the same universal élan on the Great Wall of China, in the catacombs of Paris and on record sleeves. More than just a gangly silhouette, the white man is a timeless landmark that never grows old, lighting up the street and, more broadly, our society. "Today, in troubled times, he conveys more than ever a message of ecumenical peace, and expresses in paint the joy, dynamism and all that the human body is capable of doing without constraints", explains Jérôme Mesnager from his studio in Montreuil (93), where he created the original painting that gave birth to this exceptional stamp series. "For me, painting this white man for La Poste represents much more than simply creating an additional work of art. Affixed to a stamp, his figure takes on its full dimension, that of a powerful vector of communication which, like La Poste, links all people together, whatever their nationalities and differences. I hope that this painting entitled 'Merci, facteur!' will appeal to philatelists, collectors and all those who would like to use it to send a love letter, for example", concludes the artist, who is literally and figuratively liberated.
