Description
The GIGN celebrates its 50th anniversary! With a nod to history, it was born out of the lessons learned from the hostage-taking of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics, and will celebrate its half-century in the year of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in France. 50 years of operations, from the first one in Ecquevilly to the 2,800 engagements in 2023, from the most emblematic (Djibouti, Mecca, Ouvéa, Marignane, Afghanistan, Dammartin-en-Goële, Ukraine, Sudan, etc.) to the less publicized, all of them equally singular and risky. 50 years of human adventure, of sweat and blood, with its joys and tears, its successes but also its tragedies, the many criminals apprehended and lives saved at the cost of 13 others lost in operations or training. 50 years of transformation, from a 17-strong GIGN in Maisons-Alfort in 1974 to a 1,000-strong GIGN in Versailles in 2024, now with 14 branches and a constant presence in a dozen highly sensitive countries; from intervention to observation and protection, from versatility to the finest expertise expressed in the many specialist support units. 50 years of anti-fragility, during which the GIGN has made the most of every challenge, systematically strengthening itself in response to shocks and crises, like the ancient Hydra of Lerna. 50 years of innovation, from the management of human hostage-taking to that of computer data (ransomware), from coordinated shooting to firing from a helicopter, from the explosives search dog to the camera-equipped dog, from the bulletproof shield to the exoskeleton. But also 50 years of constancy and shared values: a philosophy of action founded on absolute respect for human life; excellence in the service of the French people and France's interests; an integrated unit where operational, support and back-up are one and the same, and where a pioneering, daring spirit reigns. This commemorative stamp pays tribute to the GIGN and to all those who have served and are still serving, proudly wearing these 4 letters on their uniforms, true to their motto, "committed for life".
