Description

Two spectacular Unesco World Heritage sites. Two majestic silhouettes designed to perfection. Two architectural feats separated by thousands of kilometers... Moving witnesses to faith and culture, Mont Taishan, the first of China's five sacred mountains, and Mont-Saint-Michel, one of France's most famous sanctuaries, are the subject of a joint philatelic issue to mark the 60th anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations. Every newly enthroned emperor wanted to ascend Taishan to perform sacrifices in homage to Heaven and Earth. As visitors stroll between palaces, temples, inscriptions and sculptures, they sense the sacred nature of this place, revered for 3,000 years and a key site of Taoism. A major pilgrimage site in the Christian West, Mont-Saint-Michel owes everything to the Benedictine monks who settled here in 966. The abbey, "the Wonder", a masterpiece of Norman Gothic art, rises from a dizzying tangle of daring constructions. From the top of these two mountains, a breathtaking panorama celebrates the joint work of nature and art.
