The European Convention on Human Rights celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The Convention is at the heart of a unique system of collective responsibility for the protection of human rights. Adopted in 1950, the European Convention on Human Rights is a unique international treaty guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of over 700 million Europeans. The 46 member states of the Council of Europe are bound by its provisions, and its principles are enforced by the European Court of Human Rights, based in Strasbourg, France. In particular, the Convention protects - The right to life and security of the person - Freedom of expression and assembly - Freedom of thought, conscience and religion - The right to respect for private and family life - The right to a fair trial - The right to vote and to stand for election The Convention prohibits in particular : - Torture - Forced labor and slavery - The death penalty - Discrimination - Arbitrary and illegal detention
