Description
Text of philatelic document currently being validated (FOR INFO ONLY) A landmark on the Grandes-Alpes route, the Jardin du Lautaret was created in 1899 by Jean-Paul Lachmann, Chair of Botany at Grenoble University. He chose to establish his botanical garden on the Col du Lautaret, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, because of the abundant biodiversity associated with the altitude gradient and the area's rich geology and climate. The garden has a triple vocation: to maintain a vast collection of Alpine plants, to be a scientific Mecca where cutting-edge scientific research can be carried out, and to disseminate scientific knowledge to as many people as possible. 125 years later, this raison d'être has not aged a bit! In an incredible landscaped setting, 2,000 species of plants acclimatized to extreme living conditions are presented by geographical origin, living environment, botanical classification and medicinal, toxic or alimentary properties. Each step leads visitors to a new continent, in this botanical and dreamlike world tour. Surrounded by 360° mountains, the garden winds its way through streams, pontoons, ponds, reconstituted environments, natural meadows, a historic chalet, century-old trees, a bird kiosk... All the way to a unique view of the Meije glaciers, reflected in the water of a small, flourishing pond. The Jardin du Lautaret is open to visitors every year, from the 1st weekend in June to the 1st weekend in September. Numerous events are scheduled: guided tours, concerts, shows, storytelling walks, botanical watercolor workshops, starry sky photography, astronomy discovery courses, popularization workshops, meetings, conferences, explore game, behind-the-scenes scientific tours... But the Jardin du Lautaret is much more than just a botanical garden! It's one of the scientific research centers of Grenoble Alpes University and the CNRS in the fields of ecology, the environment, the Earth and the Universe. Researchers from all over the world come here to study and experiment with the effects of global change, climate and human practices in mountain areas.
