Description

Here, time flows with the water. In a green setting, aboard a "plate", the traditional Marais Poitevin boat, visitors glide along one of the canals that criss-cross the landscape to form an immense aquatic labyrinth. Although the "Venise verte" is the most emblematic part of the Marais Poitevin, it represents only a third of the 110,000-hectare regional nature park, the 2nd largest wetland in France, which stretches between Niort and the Atlantic. The Marais Poitevin has three faces. The first is the wet marsh, with its maze of canals lined with alders, poplars and pollarded ashes, all with their strange silhouettes staring out from the banks. Here, in between stops at harbors and charming villages, you can celebrate the marriage of water and lush vegetation in all shades of green. A radical change of scenery comes with the dry marshes, where immense plains stretching endlessly out to sea, protected by dikes and criss-crossed by large canals. With the Baie de l'Aiguillon, or maritime marsh, here's the infinity of the ocean, with its tides, salt meadows and mudflats, the delight of migratory birds. The Marais Poitevin may appear to be the fruit of nature, but it owes everything to the work of man. Covered by the sea 8,000 years ago, it had become a hostile marshland. From the 11th century onwards, monks sought to drain the land in order to exploit the soil. The abbeys of Maillezais and Aliénor bear witness to this past, where Pharaonic developments continued for several centuries, culminating in the complex hydraulic system we know today. Between land and sea, between fresh and salt water, the Marais continues its history, passionately preserving the extraordinary diversity of its flora and fauna and the richness of this exceptional heritage.
