Description

Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits. Article 27, paragraph 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), 1948 Founded in 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War, UNESCO has been striving for nearly 80 years to build a better future for humanity by promoting peace and security through international cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture. In the face of global challenges such as climate change, environmental crises and the increasing questioning of the scientific word, UNESCO's mandate is proving indispensable in providing a response to these issues, which threaten world peace and prosperity. It is for these very reasons that, on August 25, 2023, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the period 2024 to 2033 the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development, and invited UNESCO to lead its implementation. This Decade offers humanity a unique opportunity to fully mobilize the power of science in achieving the goals of sustainable development, and to ensure a prosperous and secure future for all. The International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development recognizes science as a common good for humanity, and reaffirms its fundamental role in humanity's quest for a development model that improves the human condition while preserving the planet on which our survival depends. To this end, the Decade aims to restore confidence in the scientific word, encourage a critical and reasoned spirit, and strengthen international cooperation. Together, we are laying the foundations for a more resilient, equitable and enlightened world.
