The Ars waterfall Ariege The waterfall cascades down the mountain in three successive stages over a height of 246 metres. Named after the stream that feeds it, the Ars waterfall is one of the most impressive in the Pyrenees, even more so in late spring when its waters are swollen by melting snow. This valley is a trading zone. During the Second World War, people fleeing the Occupation made their way here. It's also a traditional route for herds to Spanish pastures. Pastoralism is still very much alive here, as evidenced by the keen interest shown by visitors and locals alike in the transhumances that take place in May and June. To reach the waterfall, starting from the spa town of Aulus-les-Bains, you have to walk for a good hour and a half, first on a wide path and then on a steeper path, sometimes carved out of the rock, through the beech trees. The falls can be seen from afar and are a striking feature of the landscape. The Ars valley, with its remarkable shape, was carved out by glaciers. An emblematic site in the Ariège region, the Ars waterfall and its valley have been classified as a landscape site since 2018. It can be seen as a link between the cirque de Cagateille with its suspended valleys, also listed, and the étang de Lers, a geological mecca. It was here that lherzolite, a rare rock derived from the earth's mantle, was discovered. All these sites are located in the heart of the 18-valley Couserans region, in the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises. Mountains are everywhere. The most emblematic is Mont Valier, at 2,800 metres above sea level. These peaks are also home to the ibex, reintroduced in 2014. It had disappeared from the French part of the Pyrenean range for over a century.
