Description

Juliette Gréco Marie-Juliette is the mute, unloved youngest daughter of a bourgeois family: Gérald Gréco, the absent father; Juliette Lafeychine, the avant-garde mother; and Charlotte, the brilliant, luminous older sister. Later, Gérald, a half-brother on his father's side, was born. Juliette Lafeychine and Charlotte join the Resistance, are arrested and deported. Juliette, aged 16, was imprisoned. On her release, she took refuge with Hélène Duc in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a move that sealed her fate. In 1949, her friends Sartre, Prévert, Queneau, Doisneau, Mauriac, Kosma and Boris Vian offered her music and lyrics, and photographed her. Juliette became a singer: Gréco was born! She also became an actress, first in France, then in the United States. In 1965, she starred in the hit French TV series Belphégor! Her audacity and singularity made her a pioneer. Through her songs, often censored, she defended her ideas: skin color, gender and social class didn't exist in her eyes. Feminist, influencer and eternal lover: she doesn't love men or women, but souls! Sexuality takes a back seat. She was wife, friend, mistress and idol with equal intensity throughout her life. Her way of singing was revolutionary in the French chanson landscape: on stage, with her black, laughing eyes, her face glowing with light, in her "working black", her voice warm, her hands precise, her phrasing unique, she exuded a graceful, powerful energy. During her 70-year international career, she contributed to France's influence. For this, she has been awarded every distinction of the French Republic. In 2016, during the "Merci" tour, she suffered a stroke, bringing her career to a close. The same year she lost Laurence-Marie, her only daughter. In 2018, her husband Gérard Jouannest passed away. Despite everything, she hung on with great strength and courage, and ended her incredible life at home in Ramatuelle on September 23, 2020.
