Description

The official face of the Republic, Marianne is recognizable to all French people, even if her depiction can vary with the times and styles. Since 1944, she has been featured on a number of commonly used postage stamps. For the Salon philatélique de printemps in Paris, La Poste is honoring the Place de la République and its monumental statue. In the early 19th century, the modest Place du Château-d'Eau had no idea that it would become one of the largest squares in Paris. It was part of Haussmann's gigantic plan to transform the capital under the Second Empire. In 1865, major works were undertaken to clear the square and give it its rectangular shape. Part of the Boulevard du Temple had to be absorbed, and the many theaters that had made the "Boulevard du Crime" famous were razed to the ground. Under the Third Republic, the square took on its current name (1879). A competition was organized to create a monument to the greatness of the Republic. It was won by the Morice brothers: Léopold for the statuary, Charles for the base. When the monument was inaugurated on July 14, 1883, Parisians were greeted by a colossal bronze statue of Marianne, 9.50 m high, towering over a 15 m-high stone base featuring stone allegories of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. In 2013, the 3.5-hectare square underwent a further facelift. The area reserved for cars was reduced in favor of a large pedestrian area. At the crossroads of ten streets and boulevards, the Place de la République, with Marianne at its center wearing the Phrygian bonnet symbolizing freedom, has naturally become a gathering place where people share moments of joy or sadness, demonstrate, meditate and celebrate.
