Emmanuel Mounier 1905-1950

Emmanuel Mounier was born in Grenoble on April 1, 1905 to modest parents of peasant stock.
His studies in philosophy were marked by the teaching and friendship of Jacques Chevalier, author of the Entretiens avec Bergson.
In Paris, he continued his preparation for the agrégation in philosophy, which he obtained in 1928, at the age of 23.
His discovery of Charles Péguy's thought led him to abandon a career in academia and, with a few friends, to found Esprit magazine in 1932, an international journal and laboratory of ideas.
"A few men, in this troubled world, come to us like children with eyes full of wonder". Mounier's portrait of Péguy is in fact his own.
A man of conversation and meditation, at the age of 27 he embarked on an adventure he knew he would never get back, and accepted the risks of a precarious life for himself and his family. Spurred on by a keen sense of his vocation, he wanted to contribute through his witness and actions to making the world a more humane place: "Refaire la Renaissance" was the flamboyant title of his first article in his young magazine.
Mounier analyzed the economic and social disorders of the 1930s as the result of a crisis of civilization, born of an error about man. Following in the footsteps of the German philosopher Max Scheler, he renewed the notion of personalism, making it the foundation of his work.
Right up until his death on March 22, 1950, Mounier was involved in all the commitments that marked France and the European continent: denouncing the Munich Agreement, defending the Spanish Republic, the Resistance, condemning colonial oppression, participating in the construction of Europe.
According to his friend, the philosopher Paul Ricœur, Emmanuel Mounier possessed a rare virtue, combining strength and generosity, which made him a man who was both irreducible and offered.

Emmanuel Mounier est né à Grenoble le 1er avril 1905 de parents modestes d’ascendance paysanne.
Il y fait des études de philosophie marquées par l’enseignement et l’amitié de Jacques Chevalier, auteur notamment des Entretiens avec Bergson.
Il poursuivra à Paris sa préparation à l’agrégation de philosophie qu’il obtiendra en 1928, à l’âge de 23 ans.
La découverte de la pensée de Charles Péguy le conduit à renoncer à une carrière universitaire toute tracée et l’amène à fonder, avec quelques amis, la revue Esprit en 1932, revue internationale et laboratoire d’idées.
« Quelques hommes, dans ce monde troublé, arrivent à nous ainsi que des enfants aux yeux chargés de miracle. » Ce portrait de Péguy que nous livre Mounier dessine en fait son propre portrait.
Homme de conversation et de méditation, il se lance pourtant, à 27 ans, dans une aventure qu’il sait sans retour et accepte, pour lui et sa famille, les risques d’une vie précaire. Aiguillonné par un sens aigu de sa vocation, il veut contribuer par son témoignage et par ses actions à rendre le monde plus humain : « Refaire la Renaissance », tel est le titre flamboyant de son premier article dans sa jeune revue.
Mounier analyse, en effet, les désordres économiques et sociaux des années 30 comme étant le résultat d’une crise de civilisation, née d’une erreur sur l’homme. Il renouvelle, à la suite du philosophe allemand Max Scheler, la notion de personnalisme et en fait le fondement de son action.
Aussi Mounier participera jusqu’à sa mort, le 22 mars 1950, à tous les engagements qui ont marqué la France et le continent européen : la dénonciation des accords de Munich, la défense de la République espagnole, la Résistance, la condamnation de l’oppression coloniale, la participation à la construction européenne.
Selon son ami le philosophe Paul Ricœur, Emmanuel Mounier possédait une vertu très rare, alliant force et générosité, qui en faisait un homme à la fois irréductible et offert.
