What a life Robert Badinter lived! Lawyer, activist, intellectual, minister, he has spanned the century with an unshakeable determination to defend justice and the law.
Born into a Jewish family from Bessarabia, he moved to Paris in 1928. For the world's persecuted, France was a dreamland where all men were equal. But then came the war. His father's deportation in 1943 scarred him for life. He will always be the son of the man hunted down, stripped of his rights and murdered. After becoming a star lawyer in 1951, he led a carefree life before facing the death penalty in 1972 when he defended a man who had not killed but was guillotined all the same. From that moment on, he was committed to the cause and became a leader of the abolitionists. From 1972 to 1980, he saved the heads of five men already sentenced to death. In 1981, appointed Minister of Justice by François Mitterrand, he carried out the guillotine execution. Inventor of community service, he decriminalized homosexuality, reformed the judiciary to make it more independent, and promoted compensation for victims. President of the French Constitutional Council from 1986 to 1995, and a senator until 2011, this wholehearted, upright and sincere man, fiercely attached to republican universalism, is considered a high moral conscience at his death in 2024.

Quelle vie que celle de Robert Badinter ! Avocat, militant, intellectuel, ministre, il a traversé le siècle avec la volonté inflexible de défendre la justice et le droit.
Issu d’une famille juive de Bessarabie, il naît à Paris en 1928. La France est alors, pour tous les persécutés du monde, le pays rêvé où tous les hommes sont égaux. Mais la guerre survient. Il est marqué à vie par la déportation de son père en 1943. Pour toujours il sera le fils de l’homme traqué, dépossédé de ses droits et assassiné. Devenu avocat en 1951, vedette du barreau, il mène une vie insouciante avant d’être confronté à la peine capitale en 1972 quand il défend un homme qui n’a pas tué mais qui est tout de même guillotiné. Dès lors, il s’engage et devient le chef de file des abolitionnistes. De 1972 à 1980, il sauve la tête de cinq hommes déjà condamnés à la peine de mort. En 1981, nommé garde des Sceaux par François Mitterrand, il procède à l’exécution de la guillotine. Inventeur du travail d’intérêt général, il dépénalise l’homosexualité, réforme la magistrature pour la rendre plus indépendante, favorise l’indemnisation des victimes. Président du Conseil constitutionnel de 1986 à 1995, sénateur jusqu’en 2011, cet homme entier, droit et sincère, farouchement attaché à l’universalisme républicain, est considéré à sa mort, en 2024, comme une haute conscience morale.
