Born in Hamburg in 1910 to a French father and a German mother, Eric Schwab spent his childhood between Germany, Switzerland and France. Drawn to photography, he became an assistant in 1928 and set photographer in 1929, before working from 1931 to 1937 for the women's press (Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair...). In 1939, he published his first report on Romania for Vu and Life. Mobilized in September of the same year, he became a correspondent for AFP in October 1944. Thanks to his accreditation with the American army, he was able to report on the war in Belgium and Germany.
Early in 1945, he met American journalist and writer Meyer Levin, with whom he teamed up. They were among the first reporters to discover the Nazi camps and report their horrors to the press. "Meyer Levin was in search of what remained of Jewish communities," explains Annette Wieviorka in 1945. La Découverte (ed. Seuil, 2015), and Eric Schwab is trying to find his mother, deported to a camp as a Jew. His photos of the concentration camps were distributed internationally, and were soon exhibited in both the United States and France.
After the Liberation, the photographer left France and settled in New York in 1946, where he continued to work as a correspondent for AFP until the early 1950s. He then worked for various international organizations (UN, UNESCO, WHO, FAO, ILO, etc.), focusing on the plight of refugees. Two of his images were selected for the exhibition The Family of Man, organized by Edward Steichen and presented in New York in 1955, before travelling around the world. Alongside his commissioned work, he also carried out a number of personal projects, such as Vanishing Paris, on the transformations of the capital. His death in 1977 prevented him from completing this project.

Né à Hambourg en 1910 d’un père français et d’une mère allemande, Eric Schwab passe son enfance entre l’Allemagne, la Suisse et la France. Attiré par la photographie, il sera assistant en 1928 et photographe de plateau en 1929, avant de travailler de 1931 à 1937 pour la presse féminine (Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair...). Il publie un premier reportage en Roumanie pour Vu et Life en 1939. Mobilisé en septembre de la même année, il deviendra correspondant de l’AFP en octobre 1944. Grâce à son accréditation auprès de l’armée américaine, il réalise des reportages de guerre en Belgique et en Allemagne.
C’est au début de 1945 qu’il rencontre le journaliste et écrivain américain Meyer Levin, avec qui il fera équipe. Ils seront parmi les premiers reporters à découvrir les camps nazis et à en rapporter l’horreur à la presse. « Meyer Levin est en quête de ce qui reste des communautés juives », précise Annette Wieviorka dans 1945. La Découverte (éd. Seuil, 2015), et Eric Schwab tente de retrouver sa mère, déportée dans un camp en tant que juive. Ses photos des camps de concentration connaîtront une diffusion internationale et seront exposées très tôt, aux États-Unis comme en France.
Après la Libération, le photographe quitte la France et s’établit à New York en 1946, où il continue d’être le correspondant de l’AFP jusqu’au début des années 1950. Il travaille ensuite pour divers organismes internationaux (ONU, Unesco, OMS, FAO, BIT...) en s’intéressant au sort des réfugiés. Deux de ses images sont sélectionnées pour l’exposition The Family of Man, organisée par Edward Steichen et présentée à New York en 1955, avant de circuler dans le monde. Parallèlement à ses travaux de commande, il mène plusieurs projets personnels, comme Vanishing Paris, sur les transformations de la capitale. Un sujet que son décès, en 1977, l’empêchera de mener à bien.
