Description
To mark the 150th anniversary of the postcard in France, La Poste is reissuing 10 cards illustrating the golden age of the postcard (i.e. up to the 1920s) with a stamp on the reverse that was in use at the time of their first issue, thus becoming pre-stamped cards at the international rate, ready to post and travel. Another type of postcard is based on the "canivet" type of pious card in vogue in the 17th and 18th centuries, mechanically reproduced in the 19th century with a lace border. The canivet was painted on finely openwork parchment using a very sharp penknife (hence the name canivet, a word derived from the medieval canipulum, a small knife used by illuminators and copyists to sharpen their quill pens, and sometimes used to decorate certain pages with motifs incised into the parchment).
