Description

Mosul - al-mawsil - means "the connecting point" in Arabic. For thousands of years, this Iraqi city has been a bridge between north, south, east and west, a melting pot of diverse cultures where ethnic, linguistic and religious groups coexisted in peace. This diversity was reflected in the city's rich heritage, where buildings blended elements of Islamic and Nestorian Christian architecture and decorative arts. It was because Mosul was so singular, so multicultural, that it was overrun by Daech in June 2014. During the three-year occupation of the city, followed by the battle for its liberation in 2017, 80% of the Old City was destroyed. In 2018, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay launched the "Reviving the Spirit of Mosul" initiative, the most ambitious reconstruction campaign ever carried out directly by the Organization. The initiative is based on three pillars - heritage, cultural life and education - as key drivers of Mosul's recovery. By mobilizing $115 million and 15 partners, including the European Union and the United Arab Emirates, UNESCO has rehabilitated 124 historic houses, renovated 404 classrooms and created over 7,700 local jobs, while supporting the re-establishment of Mosul's cultural and intellectual life. The Organization has rebuilt the Convent of Our Lady of the Hour, the Al-Tahira Church, as well as the emblematic Al-Nouri mosque and its Al-Hadba minaret. Workers finished rebuilding the minaret in December 2024. Known as Al-Hadba, or "the hunchback", this 45-metre-high tower once again watches over the city. Reconstruction by UNESCO was completed in February 2025. By giving Mosul back its "spirit", the Organization has demonstrated that multilateralism and international cooperation can be turned towards concrete, results-oriented action. Today, Mosul is once again the beacon of hope it should never have ceased to be, illustrating how the power of culture and education can rebuild - in Iraq as elsewhere.
