Description
Well-known to all, the red squirrel or Eurasian squirrel, not to be confused with the American grey squirrel, is the largest tree-dwelling rodent in our forests. Its most distinctive feature is its plume-like tail. Vital to the squirrel, it acts as a parachute when jumping from tree to tree. It provides warmth in winter and protection from the sun in summer. Its diet consists mainly of conifer seeds, nuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts, berries, insects and, exceptionally, snails, eggs and small birds. In winter, it leads a slow life, but does not hibernate. In spring, the female gives birth to two or three young in a tree hollow or cozy nest, which she raises on her own. The red squirrel is a protected species. Michel Chardin, wildlife photographer
