After being incorporated into the Army on July 10, 1945, the French airborne troops faced the challenge of their training centers being scattered across the country. Military authorities decided to consolidate all paratrooper regiments, along with the ground and air resources necessary for their training, in the Southwest—a region whose infrastructure had been spared by the war.
In September 1945, the first class of paratroopers received their wings, and the Center for the Organization and Training of Airborne Troops was established in October in Mont-de-Marsan. At the same time, the 1st Parachute Chasseurs Regiment trained in Pau and conducted its jumps at Uzein from Junkers 52s flying in from Le Bourget. The geographical location of the Pau garrison, combined with favorable weather conditions known since the early days of aviation, naturally designated it as the future national paratrooper training center.
Beginning in February 1946, the school in Lannion was gradually transferred to the region. The Airborne Troops Training Center (CETAP) was established in Pau and Idron on April 16, 1946. It brought together the Mont-de-Marsan center, the Lannion school, and military personnel of all ranks from the 25th Airborne Division who had remained in metropolitan France. In May 1946, the CETAP incorporated 3,000 recruits intended to reinforce the 25th Parachute Division stationed in North Africa.
On June 1, 1946, the military parachutist badge was created. To earn it, one must complete eight automatic-opening jumps under various conditions. On June 1, 1947, the CETAP became the Airborne Troops School (ETAP). To date, more than 713,000 military paratroopers have been certified in Pau, the center of expertise for military parachute training.

Rattachées à l’armée de Terre le 10 juillet 1945, les troupes aéroportées françaises sont confrontées à la dispersion de leurs centres de formation. Les autorités militaires décident de regrouper dans le Sud-Ouest, région dont les infrastructures ont été épargnées par la guerre, l’ensemble des régiments parachutistes ainsi que les moyens terrestres et aériens nécessaires à leur instruction et à leur entraînement.
En septembre 1945, une première promotion de parachutistes est brevetée et le Centre d’organisation et d’instruction des troupes aéroportées est créé en octobre à Mont-de-Marsan. À la même époque, le 1er régiment de chasseurs parachutistes s’entraîne à Pau et effectue ses sauts à Uzein à partir des Junkers 52 en provenance du Bourget. La situation géographique de la garnison paloise, associée à des conditions météorologiques favorables connues depuis les débuts de l’aviation, la désigne naturellement comme futur centre national d’instruction parachutiste.
Dès février 1946, l’école de Lannion est progressivement transférée dans la région. Le Centre école des troupes aéroportées (CETAP) est créé à Pau et Idron le 16 avril 1946. Il regroupe le centre de Mont-de-Marsan, l’école de Lannion et des militaires de tous grades de la 25e division aéroportée restés en métropole. En mai 1946, le CETAP incorpore 3 000 recrues destinées à renforcer la 25e division parachutiste stationnée en Afrique du Nord.
Le 1er juin 1946 est créé l’insigne du brevet militaire parachutiste. Son obtention nécessite huit sauts à ouverture automatique, réalisés dans des conditions différentes. Le 1er juin 1947, le CETAP devient École des troupes aéroportées (ETAP).
