In 1945, on the initiative of Air Minister Charles Tillon, France opened up military pilot training to women. Elisabeth Boselli, 31, a graduate of the École des Sciences Politiques in 1935, an aviation enthusiast and licensed pilot since 1938, seized this opportunity. Enlisting as a second lieutenant in the French Air Force, she trained on several aircraft, including the legendary Dewoitine D.520 fighter, and on February 12, 1946 obtained her military pilot's license no. 32939. She was the first Frenchwoman to hold this qualification, but was demobilized the same year after refusing an administrative job, as female personnel were no longer authorized to fly. In 1952, having already broken more women's altitude records, Élisabeth Boselli rejoined the French Air Force, then began jet-qualification at the Meknès fighter school in Morocco. She set several world records on the Mistral, including the straight-line distance from Creil to Agadir in 1955, covering 2,331 km in 3 h 30. In 1957, wishing to serve in Algeria, she was assigned to the Escadrille de Liaison Aérienne 54 (ELA 54) on medical evacuation and liaison missions in difficult conditions - for which she received three commendations - and then to the Groupe de Liaison Aérienne 45 (GLA 45), as an air mail carrier, distributing mail for ground troops. Having flown 254 law enforcement missions for a total of 729 flying hours, including 89 wartime missions, and having been a member of the Aéro-Club de France since 1948, Élisabeth Boselli was awarded the Légion d'Honneur, the Croix de la Valeur Militaire and the Aéronautique medal, and retired from active service in 1969 with the rank of Captain - Attaché rédacteur de première classe. She died on November 25, 2005 at the age of 91.
