Storms, floods, wildfires… These extreme weather events, which we have all experienced or witnessed, can destroy infrastructure, destabilize communities, and wipe out lives. These crises, which are undoubtedly among the greatest challenges we face, are becoming increasingly frequent and affect more and more French people every year. And we must face a reality: by 2030, the average temperature will have risen by another 1.5 degrees. Climate change is no longer a possibility but a very near future, and its consequences call for a large-scale response. Today, the vast majority of French people do not feel prepared to face a natural disaster. On a human level, this requires us to adapt and strengthen our collective resilience. Whether in everyday life or in times of crisis, French Red Cross volunteers are on the ground, working closely with the communities that need them most to support them, stand by them, and help them get back on their feet. To anticipate future crises and feel a little better prepared to take action to reduce their impact, the French Red Cross is now encouraging the French public to put together an emergency kit. Designed to provide self-sufficiency for 24 to 72 hours until help arrives, the contents of the emergency kit—or “Catakit”—should enable an individual or household to meet their five basic needs: hydration, food, medical care, protection, and signaling. It should be customized to include the family’s essential items: a photocopy of identification documents, non-perishable food items, and spare car and house keys. Putting together an emergency kit is another step toward building your own resilience and helps you feel prepared to respond to a crisis.
