Mirepoix, medieval pearl of Ariège Nestled in the north-east of the Ariège region, Mirepoix is a medieval town whose timeless charm will appeal to history and heritage lovers. Founded in the 11th century, the town grew up on the right bank of the river Hers. In the 13th century, the town became an important Cathar center and fell to the crusade in 1209, only to be entrusted to the Lévis family. Destroyed by the flooding of the Hers around 1289, the town moved to the left bank. The historic center has been classified as an outstanding heritage site: a veritable open book on the past.
