Mirepoix, medieval pearl of Ariège

Nestled in the north-east of the Ariège region, Mirepoix is a medieval town whose timeless charm will appeal to history and heritage lovers. Founded in the 11th century, the town grew up on the right bank of the river Hers. In the 13th century, the town became an important Cathar center and fell to the crusade in 1209, only to be entrusted to the Lévis family. Destroyed by the flooding of the Hers around 1289, the town moved to the left bank. The historic center has been classified as an outstanding heritage site: a veritable open book on the past.
Place des Couverts, the beating heart of Mirepoix, is lined with 13th-15th century timber-framed houses, whose colorful facades and elaborate corbels bear witness to the city's past prosperity. Built of oak, chestnut and softwood, these houses once housed merchants and craftsmen. The ancient cathedral of Saint-Maurice, with its 14th- and 19th-century choir and imposing bell tower, dominates the town and is a reminder that Mirepoix was a diocese as early as 1317.
The town is also famous for its weekly market, one of the liveliest in the region, where local flavors and conviviality come together. Mirepoix, perle médiévale de l’Ariège

Nichée au nord-est de l’Ariège, Mirepoix est une cité médiévale dont le charme intemporel séduit les amateurs d’histoire et de patrimoine. Fondée au XIe siècle, la ville s’est développée rive droite de l’Hers. Au XIIIe siècle, la cité devient un important foyer cathare et tombe face à la croisade de 1209, pour être confiée à la famille des Lévis. Détruite par la crue de l’Hers vers 1289, la cité s’installe rive gauche. Le centre historique est classé site patrimonial remarquable : véritable livre ouvert sur le passé.
La place des Couverts, cœur battant de Mirepoix, est bordée de maisons à pans de bois des XIIIe-XVe siècles, dont les façades colorées et les encorbellements ouvragés témoignent de la prospérité passée de la cité. Ces maisons, construites en bois de chêne, de châtaignier et en résineux abritaient autrefois marchands et artisans. L’ancienne cathédrale Saint-Maurice, avec son chœur des XIVe et XIXe siècles et son clocher imposant, domine la ville et rappelle que Mirepoix fut diocèse dès 1317.
La ville est également célèbre pour son marché hebdomadaire, l’un des plus animés de la région, où se mêlent saveurs locales et convivialité.
