Description
One hundred years after the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which propelled Art Deco to the forefront of the world stage, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs celebrates this bold, refined and resolutely modern style from October 22, 2025 to February 22, 2026 with the exhibition "1925-2025. One hundred years of Art Deco". The museum offers a journey to the heart of the creation of the Roaring Twenties and its heritage masterpieces: nearly 1,000 works - sculptural furniture, jewelry, objets d'art, drawings, posters and fashion pieces - tell the story of the richness, elegance and contradictions of a style that continues to fascinate. Art Deco, born before the First World War and taking off in the 1920s, reflects the emergence of a new way of life. Speed, movement and freedom became the watchwords of a society at odds with previous decades. At its height, Art Deco was never theorized or formalized, its name appearing for the first time in 1966, on the occasion of the exhibition "Les années 1925: Art Déco/Bauhaus/Stijl/Esprit nouveau", which the Musée des Arts Décoratifs had already dedicated to the movement. This multi-faceted movement is defined as a set of precious shapes, motifs, materials and techniques used by designers in the 1920s and 1930s to embody the effervescence of the Roaring Twenties. The furniture and objects, modern in their forms, initially used the most refined techniques of artistic craftsmanship, and were then reserved for the wealthiest, before being disseminated, simplified, to all strata of the population. In this spirit, an unprecedented collaboration has given rise to an artistic residency at the museum. Philaposte, in partnership with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Arts Décoratifs-PSL, gave carte blanche to a young ENSAD graduate, Lisa Derocle. Thanks to a total immersion in the museum's collections and the support of teams including Mathieu Rousset-Perrier, curator of the museum's heritage, the artist was able to reinterpret works to produce a special philatelic creation in 2025 celebrating the exhibition. The research carried out during this residency underlines the authenticity of this approach, making the stamp much more than a simple vignette: a fragment of art inspired by the past, anchored in the present. A century after its emergence, Art Deco continues to inspire with its modernity, elegance and freedom of form. This exhibition brings together yesterday's and today's perspectives, demonstrating the extent to which this movement is still alive and resonating with contemporary aesthetic issues and know-how.
