Through his monumental works, JR invites passers-by to question their perceptions. From the suburbs of Paris to the favelas of Brazil, from the U.S.-Mexico border to the separation wall between Israelis and Palestinians, from the Louvre to the inside of a Californian prison, his installations share a common mission: to amplify the voices of ordinary people and encourage dialogue. In JR's eyes, the purpose of art is to make us take a fresh look at the familiar. His artistic approach is a unifying one. His participatory art project Inside Out has already enabled over 600,000 people in 152 countries to express themselves through large-format black-and-white portraits. With his Trompe-l'œil series, JR intervenes on emblematic architectures. In 2021, he opens the Palazzo Strozzi (Florence) and the Palazzo Farnese (Rome) through anamorphoses. In 2023, with Retour à la Caverne, the façade of the Palais Garnier is transformed into a monumental grotto, evoking Plato's allegory and questioning our way of seeing the world. The work reveals the world of dance and opera to onlookers. In 2026, with La Caverne du Pont-Neuf, JR transforms the oldest bridge in Paris into a place of exploration in the heart of the City of Light. He pays tribute to the vision of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, forty years after the artist couple wrapped the bridge. Strollers are invited to cross this monumental mineral formation, inspired by the quarries from which the stones that built Paris were extracted. By affixing his work to a stamp, JR takes on a new medium, extending his reflections on circulation, passage and connection.
