Camille Flammarion was born on February 26, 1842 in Montigny-le-Roi. From a very modest social background, this apostle of science worked his whole life to spread his passion for the study and observation of natural phenomena to all levels of society.
In 1858, he joined the Bureau des calculs at the Paris Observatory, attracted by the prospect of discovering the wonders of the sky. But this prestigious establishment was concerned only with celestial mechanics, not astrophysics. Disappointed, he left in 1862, when he published his first work, La Pluralité des mondes habités.
But Flammarion did not forget the amateur astronomers among whom his works (over 50, including L'Astronomie populaire in 1879, his masterpiece) awakened many a vocation. In 1883, he had a large observatory built in Juvisy-sur-Orge.
In 1887, he brought together a group of friends of science to found the Société Astronomique de France, which soon boasted a popular observatory in the heart of the Latin Quarter, open to all. The magazine L'Astronomie became the monthly bulletin, distributed on all five continents. Flammarion, after serving as the first president, remained secretary general until his death on June 3, 1925. Gabrielle, his second wife, took up the torch and continued his work.
Even in the 21st century, the "Flammarion spirit" - a subtle blend of scientific rigor, disinterestedness, enthusiasm and faith in the future - still drives the Société Astronomique de France.
As part of the "Flammarion 2025" committee set up to celebrate the centenary of Camille Flammarion's death, tribute is paid here to this French astronomer and popularizer of science.

Camille Flammarion est né le 26 février 1842 à Montigny-le-Roi. D’origine sociale très modeste, cet apôtre de la science travailla sa vie entière à répandre dans toutes les couches de la société sa passion de l’étude et de l’observation des phénomènes de la nature.
En 1858, il entre au Bureau des calculs de l’Observatoire de Paris, attiré par la perspective d’y découvrir les merveilles du ciel. Mais ce prestigieux établissement ne s’occupe que de mécanique céleste et nullement d’astrophysique. Déçu, il le quitte en 1862 alors qu’il publie son premier ouvrage, La Pluralité des mondes habités.
Mais Flammarion n’oublie pas les astronomes amateurs chez qui ses ouvrages (plus de 50, dont L’Astronomie populaire en 1879, son œuvre maîtresse) ont éveillé bien des vocations. En 1883, il fait construire un grand observatoire à Juvisy-sur-Orge.
En 1887, il réunit un groupe d’amis de la science et fonde avec eux la Société astronomique de France, bientôt dotée, en plein Quartier latin, d’un observatoire populaire ouvert à tous. La revue L’Astronomie en devient le bulletin mensuel, diffusé dans les cinq continents. Flammarion, après en avoir été le premier président, en reste le secrétaire général jusqu’à sa mort, le 3 juin 1925. Gabrielle, sa seconde épouse, reprendra le flambeau et continuera son œuvre.
Encore au XXIe siècle, “l’esprit Flammarion”, subtil alliage de rigueur scientifique, de désintéressement, d’enthousiasme et de foi en l’avenir, anime toujours la Société astronomique de France.
Dans le cadre du comité « Flammarion 2025 » créé pour les célébrations du centenaire de la mort de Camille Flammarion, hommage est rendu ici à cet astronome et vulgarisateur scientifique français.
