The Grande Mosquée de Paris, inaugurated on July 15, 1926, tells the story of the presence of Islam and Muslims in France. Built as a tribute to the Muslim soldiers of the First World War, it was born of a particular moment in national history, when the Republic recognized the diversity of those who had defended its freedom. This founding gesture gave it a profound dimension: today, it remains a haven of spirituality, peace and human brotherhood. Its architectural refinement, with colonnades, mosaics and gardens, underlines the meeting of a thousand-year-old heritage and modernity. Inspired by the art fashioned between the Maghreb and Andalusia, it offers a setting where every detail celebrates a Muslim culture that resonates with French culture, like its minaret, a symbol of rootedness and elevation, erected in the Paris skyline not far from the towers of Notre-Dame. It is a certain idea of harmony traveling from stone to human heart. For a hundred years, the Grande Mosquée de Paris has kept the light of Islam alive in the City of Light: a place that exudes devotion, transmission and hospitality. A pioneer in inter-religious dialogue, central to the organization of worship and at the forefront of Muslim thought, its main mission is to promote the citizenship of Muslims in France. Confident in its vocation, it has stood the test of time, welcoming by the thousands the faithful, the intellectuals and the curious, the great of the world and the anonymous. It continues to be an open space for those who wish to discover a singular edifice of our common heritage. They have but one door to enter, on whose pediment they will read this verse from the Koran: "Enter in peace and safety.
