Description

Andrée Putman was born in Paris in 1925. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire, she won a first prize in harmony at the age of 19. But it was off the beaten track that she built her career. After a notable stint at Prisunic, then as head of Ecart International, she revived the forgotten masterpieces of Art Deco design - Chareau, Mallet-Stevens, Eileen Gray. In 1994, she founded the Andrée Put-man agency. She quickly established an unmistakable style of pure lines, assertive contrasts and timeless purity. Her bespoke furniture, designed for her projects, reflects this demand for French elegance, without ostentation. Each location becomes a manifesto: the Morgans Hotel in New York, the CAPC museum in Bordeaux, the grand staircase at Le Bon Marché, Jack Lang's office at the Ministry of Culture, the Concorde, where she reinvents the travel space, or the emblematic Guerlain flagship on the Champs-Élysées. In Mo-naco, she designed a monumental, sculptural staircase for the Pastor family. In Hong Kong, a tower bears her name: The Putman. Her talent attracts the greatest houses ̃: she creates the Vertigo collection for Christofle, collaborates with Louis Vuitton, Lalique, Veuve Clicquot... From Paris to Tokyo, Miami to Shanghai, Andrée Putman designs places and objects that speak a universal language ̃: that of style, measure, spirit. Her daughter, Olivia Putman, continues her mother's work today within the eponymous agency, which celebrates the centenary through the re-edition of iconic furniture pieces and the development of new interior architecture projects, in the continuity of this radical and timeless style.
