Stamp - Nature - Underwater Flora

The underwater flora reveals itself at low tide or while diving: marine plants—and especially green, red, or brown algae—sometimes tiny and delicate, sometimes majestic. They stand tall like underwater trees. All it takes is a close look—or a gentle touch—to marvel at their diversity, their colors, and their beauty. Each one is a veritable oxygen factory: together, they capture solar energy to sustain the food chain. Along the tidal coastline, species surprisingly tolerant of daily cycles of exposure—such as fucus—provide refuge for an entire animal community as they wait for the tide to return. In deeper waters, kelp forms veritable forests, providing shelter and food for countless species of fish, crabs, starfish, anemones, and other animals. Their smooth, undulating fronds form a canopy that filters soft light—ideal for the growth of other algae adapted to this “understory.” In other habitats, marine plants form large, equally productive seagrass beds that serve as nurseries for many fish and provide shelter for seahorses. This flora—so elegant, powerful, and fragile—remains a world waiting to be explored, opening up many possibilities. Will we know how to care for it? The very balance of life on our planet depends on it.
