Description
David tackles a new episode in Roman history: after the foundation of Rome, the Romans, in need of women, kidnap the daughters of their neighbors, the Sabines. As the two sides go to war, the women step in and convince them to form a single nation. David's metaphor here is clear: after the French Revolution, he calls on the French to reconcile. The Sabines, 1799, Jacques-Louis David, Musée du Louvre. Chosen for the artistic stamp at the end of the year, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death. This painting also echoes postal history, as the stamp in common use from 1977 to 1982 called La Sabine de Gandon features the head of the heroine Hersilie, depicted in the center of David's painting.
