For more than half a century, Jean-Paul Belmondo (1933–2021) was one of the most beloved actors in French cinema. The man the French still call “Bébel” charmed several generations of moviegoers with his energy, his easygoing manner, and his sense of humor. Whether with a raised eyebrow, a mischievous smile, or a tight-lipped expression, his face conveyed a whole range of emotions with which audiences identified because they rang true. Rarely has an actor been able to reconcile artistic rigor with popular appeal as he did. In front of Jean-Luc Godard’s camera in *Breathless* (1960), an iconic film of the French New Wave, Jean-Paul Belmondo turned the cinematic conventions of the time on their head: the naturalness and ease of his performance stood out, and young people embraced this cynical yet charming antihero, a symbol of freedom and rebellion. Always with panache, Belmondo alternated between arthouse films and popular hits. Under the direction of filmmakers such as Melville, Truffaut, and Lelouch, he showcased a more dramatic side of his talent. Working with the greatest directors, he starred in action films. His stunts—performed without a stunt double or safety net—became legendary; audiences held their breath as “Bébel” triumphed, bringing to the characters he portrayed that unique blend of strength and nonchalance. In the Belmondo family, art is second nature. The son of a renowned sculptor and a painter, Jean-Paul had little interest in his studies but was passionate about boxing. It was on the stage that he found his calling. At the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art, he was predicted to have a career limited to supporting roles... His destiny turned out quite differently. More than just a huge star, he was a lifelong companion to millions of viewers. The French remained loyal to him. He brought them so much joy...
