The Great War brought new uses: illustrating battlefields and ruins, bearing witness or serving as patriotic propaganda. Epistolary exchanges between soldiers and families (or wartime godmothers) were essential, and reading the cards was often moving. Tens of thousands of cards circulated daily for over 4 years.

Les échanges épistolaires entre soldats et familles (ou les marraines de guerre) sont essentiels et la lecture des cartes souvent émouvante. Des dizaines de milliers de cartes ont ainsi circulé chaque jour pendant plus de 4 ans.

Since Dominique Piazza's invention, the photographic card has developed on a large scale, covering subjects as varied as tourism, the passage of time (e.g. the Montparnasse station accident in 1893 or Paris flooded in 1910) or scenes of daily life (trades, for example). But there's also a category that's always produced in small numbers for private use, with shots taken on the spot (and staged). The photograph is printed on photographic paper with the usual postcard wording on the back. All families have this type of photographic card in their old albums, with the grandfather in military dress or here at a fair stand.

Produced in very large numbers, the Bergeret card owes its name to its creator Albert Bergeret (1859-1932), a card publisher since 1896. Although his production (5,600 different cards in millions of copies) revolved around photographic cards, it was in the field of humorous "fantasy" that he made his name, from 1901 to 1908.

Typical of the Belle Époque, these cards with a mechanism (pull-tab, fold-out or simple folded flap) modified the image by revealing an additional, often humorous, view. It was also the possibility of revealing several views of the same city in an accordion fold, for example, or multiple messages thanks to a pull-tab or optical effect. Here, the slit at the top of the box is used to slide in a small folded piece of paper and close it with a collage.

Typiques de la Belle Époque, ces cartes avec mécanisme (tirette, dépliant ou simple volet plié) modifient l’image en découvrant une vision supplémentaire, souvent pleine d’humour. C’était aussi la possibilité de dévoiler plusieurs vues d’une même ville dans un pliage en accordéon par exemple ou des messages multiples  grâce à une tirette ou par effet d’optique. Ici la fente pratiquée en haut de la boîte permet de glisser un petit papier plié et d’en fermer l’accès par un collage.

The first in the series, this Libonis card is highly sought-after.
It owes its name to Léon-Charles Libonis (1841-1901). He designed this series of cards at the request of the Société de la Tour Eiffel. It is considered the first illustrated postcard, and was sold at the 1889 World's Fair from August onwards. The illustration depicts the centerpiece of the exhibition, which celebrated the centenary of the French Revolution: "The Eiffel Tower". Mailboxes were installed on each floor, and mail was collected twice a day, stamped with a special postmark.

Première de la série, cette carte dénommée Libonis est très recherchée.

At the beginning of the 20th century, card production was not sufficiently varied to appeal to all writing enthusiasts. That's why blank cards, usually on watercolor paper, were offered. While some used the paper to paint the motif of their choice, others made collages of feathers, chromos or cut-out stamps. The result is a real masterpiece, like this card featuring Semeuse stamps cut out and glued onto a watercolor background.

Au début du XXème siècle, la production de cartes n’était pas suffisamment variée pour plaire à tous les amateurs d’écriture. C’est pourquoi des cartes au recto vierge, le plus souvent sur papier aquarelle, étaient proposées. Si d’aucuns l’utilisaient pour y peindre le motif de leur choix, d’autres effectuaient des collages de plumes, de chromos, ou de timbres découpés. Le résultat produit de véritables petits chefs d’œuvre comme sur cette carte reprenant des timbres Semeuse découpés et collés sur fond aquarellé.

Another type of postcard is based on the "canivet" type of pious card in vogue in the 17th and 18th centuries, mechanically reproduced in the 19th century with a lace border. The canivet was painted on finely openwork parchment using a very sharp penknife (hence the name canivet, a word derived from the medieval canipulum, a small knife used by illuminators and copyists to sharpen their quill pens, and sometimes used to decorate certain pages with motifs incised into the parchment).

Une autre catégorie de carte postale est copiée sur les cartes pieuses type canivet en vogue aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, reprises mécaniquement au XIXe avec un bord en dentelle. Le canivet était peint sur du parchemin finement ajouré au moyen d'un canif très aiguisé (d'où le nom de canivet, mot dérivant du canipulum médiéval, petit couteau utilisé par les enlumineurs et copistes pour tailler leur plume d'oie et parfois utilisé pour décorer certaines pages de motifs incisés dans le parchemin).

Many illustrators lent their talent to postcards. Those illustrated by Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), Hungarian poster artist, painter and illustrator, and Raphaël Kirchner (1875-1917), Austrian draughtsman, painter and illustrator, were highly prized for their beauty. The latter designed some very elegant postcard series, such as "La Favorite", or "Femmes soleil", from which this card is taken, circa 1900.

Named after its inventor, a young entrepreneur from Marseilles, Dominique Piazza (1860-1941), it was invented in August 1891. It was the first card with photographs, thanks to phototyping, "a process for the mechanical reproduction of images by transferring a photograph onto a glass plate covered with a layer of bichromate gelatin". This process enabled the production of an enormous number of cheaply printed clichés.
His invention, which was not protected by a trademark, was soon copied extensively. This very early card is therefore extremely rare.

Quote from Missak Manouchian's letter to his wife Mélinée, the day before his execution.

Missak Manouchian, a survivor of the Armenian genocide who was shot on February 21, 1944 at Mont-Valérien, was a poet, worker, communist activist and hero of the Resistance.
Arrested with his 22 comrades-in-arms, all foreigners, he shouted to his judges during their mock trial: "You have inherited French nationality, we have earned it." His photo, along with those of other defendants, was featured on a Nazi propaganda poster denouncing their alleged crimes, and became a rallying symbol for the Resistance.
The Affiche Rouge inspired Aragon to write a poem (Strophes pour se souvenir, 1955), set to music and sung by Léo Ferré (L'Affiche rouge, 1961).
Through the figures of Missak and Mélinée Manouchian, it is also the unconditional devotion of Armenians to France that will be celebrated, on February 21, 2024, by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and by the entire Nation at the Panthéon.

Missak Manouchian, survivant du génocide des Arméniens, fusillé le 21 février 1944 au Mont-Valérien, fut un poète, ouvrier, militant communiste et un héros de la Résistance.
Arrêté avec ses 22 compagnons d’armes, tous étrangers, il lança à ses juges lors de leur parodie de procès : « Vous avez hérité la nationalité française, nous l’avons méritée. » Sa photo et celles d’autres prévenus firent l’objet d’une affiche de la propagande nazie dénonçant leurs prétendus crimes, mais qui devint un symbole de ralliement à la Résistance.
Cette Affiche rouge inspira à Aragon un poème (Strophes pour se souvenir, 1955), mis en musique et chanté par Léo Ferré (L’Affiche rouge, 1961).
Au travers des figures de Missak et Mélinée Manouchian, c’est aussi le dévouement inconditionnel des Arméniens envers la France qui sera célébré, le 21 février 2024, par le président de la République, Emmanuel Macron, et par la Nation entière au Panthéon.

150 years ago, on April 15, 1874, the first Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris. "Hungry for independence, Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Degas, Pissarro, Sisley and Cézanne decided to break away from the rules by organizing their own exhibitions, outside the official channels: Impressionism was born.
In spring 2024, the Musée d'Orsay will celebrate this anniversary with the exhibition "Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism", featuring some 130 works, including masterpieces of the movement. With the largest Impressionist collection in the world, the Musée d'Orsay will make this anniversary a national event, also lending some 180 major works to some thirty museums across France.
 
La Poste is taking part in this anniversary by issuing a booklet of 12 stamps entitled "Around 150 years of Impressionism with the Musée d'Orsay", illustrating works characteristic of Impressionism at its peak - or reflecting its premises, or its so-called "post-impressionist" extensions - thus reflecting the extraordinary richness of this fundamental artistic movement.
All the works selected belong to the Musée d'Orsay collection, and some will be included in the exhibition "Paris 1874. Inventing Impressionism" exhibition, while others will soon be on loan to museums in our regions.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, this stamp booklet will enable the works illustrating it to travel all over France on letters, just as the works will travel in the regions. As a great messenger of art, the stamp facilitates access to culture for all.

Il y a 150 ans, le 15 avril 1874, ouvre à Paris la première exposition impressionniste. « Affamés d’indépendance », Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Degas ou encore Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne ont décidé de s'affranchir des règles en organisant leur propre exposition, en dehors des voies officielles : l’impressionnisme est né.
Au printemps 2024, le musée d’Orsay célébrera cet anniversaire avec l’exposition « Paris 1874. Inventer l’impressionnisme », comprenant quelque 130 oeuvres, parmi lesquelles des chefs-d’oeuvre de ce mouvement. Riche de la plus vaste collection impressionniste au monde, le musée d’Orsay fera de cet anniversaire un événement national, en prêtant également près de 180 oeuvres majeures à une trentaine de musées à travers la France.
 
La Poste s’associe à cet anniversaire en émettant un carnet de 12 timbres intitulé « Autour des 150 ans de l’impressionnisme avec le musée d’Orsay », illustrant des oeuvres caractéristiques de l’impressionnisme à son apogée - ou reflétant ses prémisses, ou encore ses prolongements dits « postimpressionnistes» - reflétant ainsi l’extraordinaire richesse de ce courant artistique fondamental.
Toutes les oeuvres sélectionnées appartiennent à la collection du musée d’Orsay ; elles figureront, pour certaines, dans l’exposition "Paris 1874. Inventer l’impressionnisme", tandis que d’autres seront bientôt prêtées à des musées dans nos régions.

Célébrant les 150 ans de l’impressionnisme, ce carnet de timbre permettra aux oeuvres qui l’illustrent de voyager dans toute la France sur des lettres, tout comme les oeuvres voyageront en région. Grand messager de l’art, le timbre facilite l’accès à la culture pour tous.

This year's Carnet Croix-Rouge celebrates 160 years of the Red Cross.

The stamps represent key moments in the history of the French Red Cross:

TP 1: Its creation in 1864
TP 2: Help during the flooding of the Seine in 1910. This was the first "major" natural disaster managed by the Crf. The Crf's disaster risk management activities were to prove their worth many times over.
TP 3: 1914 - First World War: 68,000 mobilized nurses intervened to support civilians, marking a new milestone in their support of the population.
TP 4: 1940 - deployment of the Rétablissement des Liens Familiaux (RLF) program for prisoners of war. This took the form of managing and supervising the sending of parcels and/or letters to prisoners of war.
TP 5: 1947 - Childcare professions - marks the launch of the French Red Cross' early childhood training activities.
TP 6: October 1956 - Homecare and EHPAD retirement homes: the launch of activities that are now firmly rooted in the local area. These activities are carried out both by volunteers (in social action) and by employees (in health and social establishments).
TP 7: 1977 - the 1,000,000th first-aider trained in lifesaving techniques.
TP 8: 1984 - Marauding activity begins.
TP 9: 1997 - First social grocery stores.
TP 10: 1864-2024 160 years of the French Red Cross.

Cette année le carnet croix-rouge célèbre les 160 ans de la croix-rouge. 

Les timbres représentent des moments forts de l'existence de la croix-rouge française : 

TP 1 : Sa création en 1864 
TP 2 : L'aide apportée lors des inondations dû aux crues de la Seine en 1910. C'est la première "grosse" catastrophe naturelle gérée par le Crf. L'activité de gestion des risques de catastrophes a eu souvent l'occasion de montrer son efficacité par la suite. 
TP 3 : 1914 - Première guerre mondiale : Interventions de 68 000 infirmières mobilisées, actions de soutien aux civils qui ont marqué un nouveau jalon de leurs accompagnements de population. 
TP 4 : 1940 - déploiement de l’activité de maintien des liens familiaux (Rétablissement des liens familiaux RLF) pour les prisonniers de guerre. Cela se matérialisait par la gestion et l'encadrement de l'envoi de colis et/ou couriier destinés aux prisonniers de guerre. 
TP 5 : 1947 - Métiers de la puériculture - marque le lancement des activités de formation en lien avec la petite enfance de la croix-rouge française. 
TP 6 : Octobre 1956 - Les soins à domicile et les maison de retraites EHPAD : lancement d'activités qui sont aujourd'hui totalement ancrées sur les territoires. Ce sont des activités remplies au bien par les bénévoles (dans l'action sociale) que par les salariés (dans les établissements sanitaires et sociaux). 
TP 7 : 1977 - le 1 000 000 ème secouriste formé aux gestes qui sauvent. 
TP 8 : 1984 - Apparition de l'activité de maraudes. 
TP 9 : 1997 - Premières épiceries sociales. 
TP 10 : 1864-2024 160 ans de la Croix-Rouge française.

Long considered a nuisance animal, the fox (Vulpes vulpes), now listed as a species likely to cause damage (ESOD), is paying dearly for its unjustified reputation. Always close to us in town and country, the opportunistic fox plays a major role in biodiversity. Sometimes a scavenger, it eliminates small sick animals and prevents many epidemics. Extremely useful to agriculture, it consumes over six thousand small mammals (carnivores, rodents, insectivores, etc.) per year, and thus competes very largely and naturally with the spraying of chemical products such as bromadiolone.
As you can see, the fox is our ally, and we owe it to ourselves to protect it.

Collector 4 stamps - The Fox - Green Letter

Gérard Lo Monaco, born in Buenos Aires in 1948, is an illustrator, designer and paper engineer with a background in typography and lettering.
His work as a set painter at the Opéra de Paris and the Théâtre National de Chaillot, inspired by his taste for unfolding space, gave rise to pop-up books in relief.

This diorama is based on the principle of the "tunnel", an old-fashioned optical paper entertainment system which, through a succession of cut-out and illustrated planes, recreates the illusion of perspective and depth.

It is the precious presentation case for the "EDITION ET RELIURE" stamp, evoking the atmosphere of Gutenberg's workshop in 1450, the date of the invention of printing, which enabled the transmission of knowledge.

It bears witness to the expertise of La Poste Group's stamp and security printing plant in the Dordogne.
Produced on traditional Rives paper without glue spots, it includes 4 "EDITION et RELIURE" stamps from the 1954 Métiers d'art series, specially reprinted in monochrome intaglio.



The "Birth of printing" diorama is made up of 4 overlapping scenes, to be joined together by a paper folding and fastening system. Assembly instructions are included with each diorama to help you assemble the scenes.

Le diorama "Naissance de l'imprimerie" est constitué de 4 scènes qui se superposent et sont à réunir par un système d’attache et de pliage papier. Une notice de montage est jointe à chaque diorama pour aider à l'assemblage des scènes.

The largest wild mammal and cervid in France, the red deer (Cervus elaphus) has long since earned its rightful place as the king of the forest. Born as a fawn, it becomes a heifer at six months, after which its first antlers give it the name daguet. By the age of six, he'll be wearing around ten horns, which he'll lose every year of his life in the depths of winter, only to see them grow back even larger under velvet in the spring. In mid-September, he'll be able to take part in the great autumn festival from afar, as he's still too young to do so. The slabbing season has begun. A few years later, as an older, bigger and better armed stag, he'll become the master of his domain and will be able to claim the right to reproduce his species.

Plus grand mammifère et cervidé sauvage vivant en France, le cerf élaphe (Cervus elaphus) a depuis longtemps acquis ses lettres de noblesse en étant surnommé le roi des forêts. Il naît faon, devient hère à six mois et ensuite ses premiers bois lui donneront l’appellation de daguet. À six ans, il portera environ dix cors qu’il perdra chaque année de sa vie au cœur de l’hiver pour les voir repousser encore plus grands sous velours au printemps. À la mi-septembre, il va pouvoir participer de loin, car encore trop jeune, à la grande fête de l’automne où les raires vont résonner dans toute la forêt. La saison du brame aura commencé. Quelques années plus tard, plus vieux, plus imposant et mieux armé, grand cerf, il deviendra maître de place et pourra ainsi prétendre à la reproduction de son espèce.

Minifoil 10 stamps - André Japy - International Letter

As part of the philatelic program for the year 2024, the Air Mail stamp pays tribute to an aviator, André Japy (1904-1974), the man of great raids and exploits, record-breaking aviator.

Born on July 11, 19041 in Beaucourt (Territoire de Belfort) and died in 19742, André Japy was a French aviation pioneer from the Japy industrial dynasty in the Comtois region. He was the holder of several long-distance records, and in 1938 was awarded the Louis Blériot Medal by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale for all his achievements.
The stamp illustrates a key episode in his career: a raid to Japan in 1936, after which he became a legendary figure in Japan.

The stamp features a portrait of André Japy, with a view of his iconic aircraft to his right,
a view of his iconic plane, the Caudron Simoun, above a tori (traditional Japanese gate), wild geese and a red sun, symbols of Japan, to which he was very close.

Dans le cadre du programme philatélique de l'année 2024, le timbre de La Poste aérienne rend hommage à un aviateur, André Japy (1904-1974) ,l'homme des grands raids et des exploits, aviateur recordman.

Né le 11 juillet 19041 à Beaucourt (Territoire de Belfort) et mort en 19742, André Japy est un pionnier français de l'aviation, issu de la dynastie industrielle comtoise des Japy. Il fut détenteur de plusieurs records de longues distances et reçut en 1938 de la Fédération aéronautique internationale la médaille Louis Blériot pour l'ensemble de ses exploits. 
Le timbre illustre un épisode marquant de son parcours lors d'un raid vers le Japon en 1936 à l'issue duquel il devint une figure légendaire au Japon.

Sur le timbre est illustré un portrait d'André Japy avec à sa droite,
une vue de son avion emblématique, Caudron Simoun, au-dessus un tori (portail traditionnel japonais), des oies sauvages et un soleil rouge symboles du Japon dont il fut très proche.
